Electricity grid balancing with home appliances

Electricity grid balancing with home appliances

Author: Georg Rute

Helping to balance the supply and demand of electricity by switching on or off large numbers of household appliances.

During the hackathon the aim is to build a 3D-printed ‘smart plug’ with a Raspberry Pi, a relay and mobile internet that will control an electric radiator or water heater. We will develop optimisation software which operates the appliance according to user needs, the price of electricity and any unpredictable control signals from the electricity system operator.

The initial, extremely basic prototype has been built and tested, but we want to take this further. We are commercialising this technology as a start-up company.
