Safecrossing

Safecrossing

Author: Markus Kaljuste

Safecrossing is low-cost pedestrian safety system that can be installed to unregulated crossing. The idea behind Safecrossing is simple: if pedestrian is approaching to crossing, red light is lit on a road sign aimed to car drivers. System will be more efficient than existing safety solutions for pedestrian crossings as it relies on car drivers instinct to brake as soon as red light becomes visible. Also, red light would be only lit if pedestrian is approaching to crossing. It assures that the system does not put car drives ‘to sleep’ as existing systems do. For example, if pedestrian crossing is marked with constant light, then drivers attention is firstly drawn by the light and only after that car driver is able to see the pedestrian. It wastes valuable seconds that could reduce the braking distance.

Safecrossing’s beacon could be an autonomous device that is attached to already existing road sign (for keeping the installation cost low) or integrated directly into road sign (suitable for a new or renovated pedestrian crossing). The price level of Safecrossing system is a lot lower than a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights. Potential market includes all states and municipalities where poor visibility can be encountered and where human lives are highly valued.
