BraillePad

Author: Siim Sepman

BraillePad is on mobile phone back-side situated chord-keyboard that allows text entry without changing finger placement. Because of such innovation it is possible to write on a display from what-ever position.

Braille writing was developed because of Napoleon requirement for solders to communicate with each other silently and in dark. Today Braille is mainly a writing and reading tool for blind people.

Similar idea is BraillePen Slim. However, it is a separate device.

There are mobile apps that allow to enter Braille on touch screen. Video http://youtu.be/xlwRxzljt7g illustrates how dumb person can make himself heard with speech synthesizer. The major disadvantage for software solution is the fact, that whole smart device’s screen is occupied by keyboard.

BraillePad is placed on the back side of mobile phone and makes possible ergonomic text entry. At the same time smart phone’s usual functionality is preserved.

BraillePad first goal is to allow all keyboard symbol entry to phone. Only delete, space and line break buttons will remain on phone display. The next step could be using phone as a bluetooth keyboard and trackpad for computer.

In addition BraillePad works as a tripod for phone
