Benjamin Joffe, “Going From Hackathon to Hardware Corporation the HAX Way”

About the presenter

benjaminjoffeBenjamin Joffe (@benjaminjoffe) is a Partner at HAX (www.hax.co), the world’s leading hardware startup accelerator, an angel investor and a popular speaker at global tech events.

At HAX, his work covers deal sourcing as well as advising startups on strategy, marketing, PR and fundraising. HAX is based in Shenzhen and San Francisco, and made over 150 investments covering robotics, health tech and IoT. Notable startups include Makeblock (Lego for robotics), NextThing (creators of the world’s first $9 computer) and Simbe Robotics (retail inventory robot). HAX startups have run over 60 crowdfunding campaigns, 90% reaching over $100,000 and 8 over $1mln.

Prior to HAX, Benjamin worked in aerospace, telecom, gaming and was the founder of an Asia-focused strategic consulting company with clients including Fortune 500 companies, startups and thought leaders such as Harvard Business School and IDEO.

Benjamin has been a speaker at over 200 tech events including TechCrunch Disrupt, Pioneers, TEDx, Slush and GMIC. He writes guest columns on TechCrunch, was a columnist for China Entrepreneur Magazine, and is frequently quoted in media such as Forbes, WIRED, Bloomberg and Quartz.

Benjamin has been living in Asia (China, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Malaysia) since 2000 and speaks English, French, Japanese and a fair bit of Mandarin.

Georg Rute is co-founder of Sympower that helps to build a cleaner grid by enabling access to flexible electrical appliances to balance the grid in real-times. Sympower customer is the electricity grid operator who pays for being able to reduce power use during times of grid stress. Georg is talking about the obstacles in developing technology product and how to avoid them.

When we speak about IoT first thing that pops in our minds are smart devices, that we can use at home. Second thing that pops up in IT guys mind is DATA sheer amount of data that these devices collect and send to their mastermind creators. During this session I will give glimpse into building your own “cloud-brains” for all connected devices or solutions that you would like to build. This will be techy talk, more code and concepts, less slides. We will cover data collection from our smart devices, then processing of these data and providing feedback back to smart devices, that we built. Talk will be based on Azure IoT Services.

Aigars is a Technical Program Manager in Skype (Localization). His interests are related with building scalable backend, chatbots andmachine learning. From technical perspective he is proficient in Azure, C#, JavaScript.

LoRa® is a radio-technology that allows to create wide area connections with low power consumption. One gateway or station is able to cover a whole city or hundreds of square kilometers with low cost. NORAnet is a new IoT network in Estonia.

Peep Põldsamm is founder and member of board in Unitcom Eesti OÜ. In the leadership of Peep Põldsamm, Unitcom Eesti is developing in cooperation with NAS Nordic Automation Systems Estonia’s first IoT LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) network NORAnet. Peep Põldsamm is also a partner in Keystone Advisers, where he advises companies and their owners in merge and aquisition matters, raising capital and finding solutions for various financing schemes.

He has been acting earlier as a development director of Levicom Group, director of strategy and member of board at Tele2, CEO of State Infocommunication Foundation. Peep has been active in various telecom and IT companies during past 25 years. He considers radio communication engineer education from Tallinn University of Technology as a great starting point for his career. He has gained additional knowledge in business administration from Henley Business School.

In 2009 Skeleton Technologies started to develop ultra-capacitors for ESA satellites. Today similar solutions are used in KERS-systems, MRI scanners, grid solutions, planes and even in some trucks driving around on Estonian roads.
